Girl it up! Taikutsu Remedy!

Ladies and gentlemen, today, I, Snark, shall go where no man has gone before!

I shall watch shoujo anime.

As I have mentioned prior, I've noticed a bit of a discrepancy in the anime fandom, where whilst it seems fairly commonplace for girls to like anime aimed at boys, the reverse is not as everyday a sight.

Therefore, I, Snark, shall take the plunge! I shall watch a really girly anime in full, and blog about every single episode I watch! But first, I need your help! To be honest, I know jackshit about shoujo and josei anime, so I need you guys to recommend something to me. After a few days, I will tally up all the recommendations, and watch whichever show gannered the most votes.

But before y'all start recommending, I must first lay a few ground rules;
  1. The show must be fairly recent; preferably within the past eight years
  2. It must be no more then 26 episodes
  3. It must be fairly indicative of the shoujo or josei genre. I know this is a subjective term, but just don't try recommend GaoGaiGar or something.
  4. It can't be Ouran High School Host Club; I've already seen that
Well, that's all! Recommend away readers! And with your help, we shall girl up the anime blogosphere! One episode at a time!

  1. I have some suggestions. I'm not sure if they are indicative of the shoujo or josei genre, but I think they are.
I really really loved Paradise Kiss. I think that's pretty representative of what shoujo anime is like.
I also liked Kuroshitsuji and Loveless, although those two might have a little more BL tone than other shoujo anime.

  2. Skip Beat
    Gakuen Alice
    Fruits Basket
    Lovely Complex
    Special A
    Wallflower

  3. Peach Girl is fairly atypical of the Shoujo genre. 1 Girl. 2 Guys. Drama. Bitchy best friend. And I actually watched all of it. Which considering my short attention span lately means something.

I would also recommend Nana, except that has waaaayyy too many episodes. But the music in it rocks

Wallflower's definitely too light for Snark. He needs something much more. :p
Haven't watch the others myself though.

    @Snark
And so I'd strongly recommend that you watch Ayashi No Ceres and Suffer! Lol!
Although it's from Y2k so kinda missed your mark by 1 year. The graphics/animation is good, so it won't feel "too" vintage. But the love going on in there... -.-"

  5. I just realised... I watch mostly shounen anime xD;; I can only recommend Paradise Kiss and Fruits Basket [& Ouran, but you've seen it]. Ah~! Try 'Full Moon wo Sagashite', I wasn't able to watch the whole anime, but I've read the manga and it was good~

    The majority of shoujo that I'm exposed to is manga or jdrama [and 2 or 3 kdramas], would have a lot of of titles to recommend if you had asked for manga instead xD;

  6. Ayashi no Ceres was one of the first subbed anime I watched. I couldn't tell it was targeted at girls with all the violence, malice, destruction, revenge...

Fruits Basket and Kare Kano are the two shows that come to mind when I think of Shoujo.

By the way, nice lesbians in the opening pic.

  7. Another Fruits Basket vote.

Sadly, it seems to me many series straddle the line.
While, for instance, "Onegai Sensei!" is designed to appeal to the sensibilities of lonely, hopeful, 15 year old boys, is there any reason girls won't like it for the exact same reasons?

I need to get back to reading Fruits Basket, but it has way too many volumes.

If you didn't care about length, and wanted a girl anime which also has cool fights, try Inuyasha.

  8. I havent seen too much shoujo shows, only Angel Sanctuary and Fushigi Yuugi, but I see many comments refering Fruits Basket.

  9. Hm, how about Clamp stuff?

    XXHolic, Sakura Chronicles, etc.?
I dunno, most girls I know watch the same series I do, but that may just be cause they don't have any other options?

  10. My friend recommends

vampire knight, fruits basket, skip beat, special A, yamato nadeshiko shichi henge!

  11. Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (aka The Wallflower) (aka Perfect Girl Evolution). Art may not be pretty to the majority's eyes, but it had been very dark and hilarious! Bwahahahaha!!!!!

the other shoujo manga that I remember at the moment had given me headaches =_=

  12. Are you sure you didn't mean Yuri? because honestly what's so special about shoujo? (I'm drawing a conclusion from the yaoi pic XD)

    anyway good quality shoujo:
    Lovely Complex
    Honey and Clover
    White Album
    Bokura Ga Ita

  13. I can give better recommendation if it's manga. Cause for anime, I can't find any (at the moment) that suits your requirement.

So if you do have time in manga instead of anime, I will HIGHLY suggest Shinobi Life (http://www.onemanga.com/Shinobi_Life/). It's still ongoing, scanlation only reached until chapter 31. It is also the first & only scanlation project I'm involved in. XD

I would also say Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, but maybe you already read/watch it.

  14. I'd say the epitome of Shoujo would be Peach Girl, ol' fashioned recycle of 1 girl 2 guys and an added flavour of a friend who is really a b@#$% which doesn't help the manly soul to any end. Though I've only seen the first episode and couldn't think of watching the next epeisodes when I saw where it was going to go in the next few episodes

  15. Havent seen that much Shoujo but Id vote for Lovely Complex. The Art Style isnt horrible and its a nice simple Love Series.
Another Shoujo Series wich was rather good was Nana but it disqualifies itself for having too many episodes.

  16. Watch me some yaoi animu and report back the results! Can't stand shojo in general, but Kannazuki no Miko is a personal favourite!

    ReplyDelete
  17. As a transition anime from Super Robot anime to Shoujo Anime, try "Kannazuki no Miko". it includes Hot blooded Super Robot, Yuri, Shonen Ai, and shoujo manga art.

To push u further into agony of shoujo anime:
    Kyo Kara Maoh!
    Junjo Romantica

    good luck

  18. @ Baka Raptor
Of course. I only ever feature the best lesbians.

    @ Everyone
Unless I've counted wrongly, looks like Fruits Basket wins with 5 votes! Thank you all, expect posts relating to it either later this week or early next!

  19. SHIT! I missed the vote! Should watch Skip Beat!too! GO GO Skip Beat! It's a pretty funny series.

Although Fruits Basket is amazing too so it's ok.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh this was a vote? XD But either way I would've recommended Fruits Basket as well... made me cry every other episode... Hmm... I'm actually thinking what kind of things in the series will piss you off, but I'm not sure yet ^^;

  21. Lightning Sabre, he knew what he was asking for. Now he needs to sit through it.

  22. Bokura ga Ita!
    Full Moon wo Sagashite!
    Hmm... Ristorante Paradiso!

  23. I can't believe no ones mentioned Clannad... or Kanon... they're girly enough to be shoujo, but Kanons based on a eroge... So not entirely girly lol. Clannads just based on a Visual Novel, ero-free.

As someone else said, Clamp stuff! I would say watch Cardcaptor Sakura, but thats substantially longer than 26 eps lol. What about Super Gals!!! Ooooo watch that!! And To Heart! The original series, not the To Heart 2 anime... thats pretty bad... animations rough too lol.

What else...hmmmm... well, as another said Lovely Complex is great. You could try Hatsukoi Limited. Recent, over now, but I really liked it. Twas sweet.

  24. I can't consider Fruit Basket and Clannad, Sunohara, Tomoya, main dude (forgot his name), Kyo, Shigure, Hatori, and Yuki (when against Kyo) are all manly awesome. Also CLAMP series are too bizarre you can't really consider them shoujo (especially when CLAMP were inspired by JoJo's Bizarre Adventures, one of the epitomes of manliness and the epitome of fabulousness)Also Yue, Keroberos and Shaoran are awesome too

  25. But that's the thing.

They're candy for the women. That some little boy may use them as role-models is besides the point.

Though yes, even if not in appearance, most men in Yaoi for instance, are merely women with penises.
